Do you want your website at the top?

Chances are that with your website online you want to get your website to the top of the search engines, so that potential clients will go online, type in your key words on a search engine and hey presto! I would agree in most cases being at the top of the search engine for a particular search is a major benefit, so if its that straight forward why can't you just optimise the site your self? Its just Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?... I will tell you why...

Serach Engine Optimisation (SEO) is an Art

To correctly Search Engine Optimise a website there is a lot of work involved, not just to get you to the top, but to keep you there. For example, lets say you own a florist website and you live in Liverpool. Ok, what will your keywords be? 'Flowers in Liverpool'? Now will this search work? The answer at this stage is possibly. Without thorough Search Engine research that is as much certainty you can have. Let's look at it from a customer's point of view: that time of year has popped around and you need to get those all important Valentines flowers and quick! You get online, go to your favourite search engine... now what will you type? 'Flowers in Liverpool'? Unlikely - you know what you need: you need to buy roses. Lets also say that you live on the outskirts of Liverpool and you have a car, why would you limit yourself to Liverpool? So this would mean that you would look wider, perhaps Merseyside - so what have we ended up with? The potential client will not be typing 'flowers in Liverpool', they will be typing 'buy roses Merseyside'. Right, so where is your site? It's nowhere to be seen. This does not mean that the company at the top of this particular search will be a better business, or provide a better service, it is simply the result of SEO good research.

Big SEO Boys will make you small

I think its fair to say that the biggest problem with getting to the top online is the competition. Depending on your industry and target audience, getting to the top could be relatively easy or a major struggle for the inexperienced, espcially if the Competition is using Search Engine Optimisation Professionals. When learning to swim very few people will jump into the deep end and start swimming lengths. The best approach is to start at the shallow end, work on your technique and perfect your performance. Beating the competition online is much the same: if you attempt to battle the 'Big Boys' head-on, chances are you will get nowhere and be struggling to stay afloat. This is why constant monitoring and tweaking of your website and the embedded elemenst of Serach Engine Optimisation is crucial to maximise your website's results, only taking on the 'Big Boys' when you are ready to jump in and leave them hung and dry.

Website traffic quality

Ok you have spent hours researching good keywords, you have got your website to the top of several search engines, the traffic to your website has flooded your website but ... you are making barely any sales, why is this? This is a problem that is experienced all too often by many inexperienced website Search Engine Optimisers, and there could be a few reasons, but the most likely is quality of traffic. Let say you are at the top of Google for "swimmming pools liverpool" what a great place to be .. so you would think. The problem is that there may well be alot of people searching for swimming pools, but they are probibly looking to use one, not buy. So all that hard work, time and effort is wasted.

Blackhat VS Whitehat

Its obvious that people are competing for top position on search engines, so as more people do the same things to get their website to the top, search engines make new ways to search website content to decide the most relevant websites to display for a particular search. This is where Blackhat and Whitehat Search Engine Optimisation techniques have come into play. Many people have looked a their website, had a little think and had a sudden brain wave of how to get their site to the top of a search engine. So is this sudden brain wave a blessing, or the beginning of your online destruction? This depends on whether the technique is considered an ethical procedure or a cheat on the searchers. Whitehat Search Engine Optimisation techniques are technqiues used to optimise your site and appreciated by serach engines, whereas Blackhat Serach Engine Optimisation techniques are techniques used to get your website up the search engines but result in searchers getting websites displayed that they dont want, just wasting their time. If a search engine comes to your site and you have used Whitehat Search Engine Optimisation technqiues, you will give yourself the best chance of gettting results. However, if a search engine comes to your site and discovers and Blackhat Search Engine Optimisation technique, you are in trouble: you are likly to be marked down, lose your place on the search engine and have difficulty getting back up. Search engines are changing their procedures all the time, so you need to be up-to-date on your knowledge of Blackhat and Whitehet Search Engine Optimisation techniques.

Failure by association

Let say you have followed all the rules, worked hard on your site, only used Whitehat techniques, but your site is dropping instead of going up the search engines? What is going on? The most common and devastating cause of this symptom is you are being affected by a Blackhat Search Engine Optimisation technique. As a business you what to associate your website to other relevant sites, so that you clients can find what they want and you can gather potential clients from the other site. The issue is that if you are linked to a website that is using Blackhat techniques, it could be reflected on your website as you are linked and therefore associated. For this reason it could be very devastating to your optimisation to exculde a solid understanding of Blackhat techniques and careful examination of your associated websites.
